Between 1992 and 1993, 311 moved to California, signed with Capricorn Records, released the Music album, and began extensive touring. At this early stage in the band’s career, there was no central point where 311 fans could obtain up-to-date tour info and news of 311 happenings. But thanks to Joan O’Reilly and Pat (P-Nut’s mom and step-dad), a newsletter was created and included in the merchandise brochures that were mailed out to the 311’s fan database. They also helped oversee a 1-800 number that fans could call for 311 news. In the Fall of 1993, the first issue of “In Your Face” went to press. By 1994, “In Your Face” was being issued quarterly. By 1996, 311’s popularity exploded with the release of their self-titled “Blue Album”. It was later renamed 311 Hive Letter.
311 Hive / Merch Foldouts
311 Hive newsletter was similar to “In Your Face”. It featured band updates, tour dates, fan messages and photo collages. In 1998, the newsletter combined with the merchendise catalogs. It ran until 1999, as the dawn of the internet-age made sending newsletter updates by email more feasible to the band’s ever-expanding fanbase.
